A salute to Fr. James Manning

Fr. Jim was my pastor from July, 2005 to June 2006. It turns out we both left St. Albert the Great, in Kettering, Ohio. I went to serve two small country parishes. He went to serve in a different way. See the tribute here....In Memory of Father Jim Manning

PragerU's Marissa Streit interviews historian Niall Ferguson.

PragerU's CEO, Marissa Streit, interviewed historian Niall Ferguson on "Whether the U.S. Can Avoid World War III". Professor Ferguson, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and Harvard University, starts his discussion with general comments that bleed into questions and comments on the ancient conflict between Athens and Sparta, followed by several major wars in the last few hundred years of world history.

Escapism is not a solution to life’s challenges.

I have to admit, this PragerU video impressed me: ”The void: finding happiness in a world of escapism.”

One way AI can be used negatively...

The February 10, 2025 issue of the "Epoch Times" reports "DeepSeek Pushes CCP Censorship, Propaganda on a Global Scale". DeepSeek is an AI project of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool that can be, and is, used by folks who hate democracy, freedom of thought and representative government. May God have mercy on their souls!

ICE ICE Baby

Fifteen years ago, Vanilla ICE was popular.  Today, ICE ain't so popular to almost half of our citizenry.  That tells me a ton of what has happened to our culture.

Dealing with hot flashes on hormone blockers.

I'm pretty sure my father, George Alderson, died of bone cancer.  That's a nasty disease originating from prostate cancer.  It especially targets some men who have high testosterone levels.  George was a Marine who served at the tail end of World War II, most likely in the Pacific theater.  He most probably suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD (see Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and had a lot of difficulty holding down a job.

Has Wikipedia been taken over by leftists?

This claim is very serious. If it's true, Wikipedia will lose all credibility regarding matters of history, politics, government, economics, justice, education and religion. It's conceivable it could also impact matters of science.

Check out this claim on X: Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger on how his site went woke.

Dr. Jordan Peterson interviews Dallas Jenkins.

Check it out at Dr. Jordan Peterson interviews Dallas Jenkins.. Dr. Peterson's analysis is particularly deep here. I've learned important things from it. (A little over an hour and a half into the video, Dr. Peterson mentions someone of whom I'd never heard. I found his name in Wikipedia at Sergei Bulgakov, in case you're interested.)

Who I am...

I'm a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. My current duties include daily Mass, administering the sacraments and pastoral care. These duties remain standard in retirement until health reasons abridge or preclude them. A priest who retains his calling only retires completely when he is no longer physically and mentally able to hear confessions. I'm currently serving at St. Teresa in Springfield, Ohio. For further information, check out my background.

(Note: There are four famous Saint Teresa's. This one is the French St. ThĂ©rĂšse of Lisieux (whose original name was Marie Françoise-ThĂ©rĂšse Martin).  The other three well known ones - in chronological order - are Teresa of Ávila, Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (her religious order name) whose original name was Edith Stein, and, last but not least, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, whose original name was AnjezĂ« Gonxhe Bojaxhiu)
