Krista Branch sings "I am America".

The video of her song cites 2nd Chronicles 7:14... "If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land."

The ambition of Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis

In chapter 2 of the Book of Genesis, God warns Adam and Eve: "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die."

This claim is, of course, problematic on at least two points: (1) the first clause is contradicted by the second, and (2) Adam and Eve do become subject to the law of death, but they do not die on the day they eat of that fruit. They might have, instead, been stated thus:

Why we support independence day every July 4th.

Every July 4th we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a document declaring and justifying the decision of the signers to lead the states into independence from Great Britain and its ruler at that time, King George III.

The conclusion of the panel of scholars...

The Daily Wire's "Exodus" study finishes with episode 17, a recap of lessons learned by each of the scholars who were most connected with the 16 episode study. They were...

A panel of scholars examine the Book of Exodus.

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson convened a panel of scholars to examine the Book of Exodus. There are 17 sessions (termed episodes) altogether, stretching from November 25, 2022 to May 3, 2023. This study examines the book from several perspectives, including religious, philosophical, poetic, psychological and existential. One can even benefit from a rudimentary knowledge of chaos theory to glean wisdom from this study. It's truly a profound study. In episode 13 (as well as previously in a few instances) Dennis Prager (author of "The Rational Bible" study of the books of the Pentateuch — of which his study of three of the books are already published) humbly notes that he's learned new perspectives about God's motivations that he never considered before. And he's by no means the only one who acknowledges learning deep perspectives not considered before.

A reading from Isaiah, chapter 61

In a reading from Isaiah, chapter 61, we find a prophesy of salvation after a period of immense travail. Using language that hearkens to the jubilee year, declared in Leviticus, chapter 25, Isaiah tells us,

"How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?"

The Blessed Virgin Mary asks the Archangel Gabriel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?" (Personally, I prefer the earlier, more literal translation, "since I have not known man." The new, "modern" version is much more clinicial in its phrasing of so delicate and personal a matter.) Those of us who are amateur theologians may note the evident similarity of her bold question to Zechariah's query, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." There is a crucial difference, however, in the purposes of these questions.

"I am the Immaculate Conception!"

So said the Blessed Virgin Mary, to St. Bernadette at Lourdes, in response to St. Bernadette's question, "Would you be so kind as to tell me who you are?"

Faith and Science vs. Faith and Creationism

A Paul Mirecki, U. of Kansas professor of religious studies, resigned due to the stir he caused there by insulting religious fundamentalists (some of whom go to that school) because of their creationist views. The CNN report, "Anti-creationism prof quits department chair," summarizes the situation this way,

Who I am...

I'm a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. My current duties include daily Mass, administering the sacraments and pastoral care. These duties remain standard in retirement until health reasons abridge or preclude them. A priest who retains his calling only retires completely when he is no longer physically and mentally able to hear confessions. I'm currently serving at St. Teresa in Springfield, Ohio. For further information, check out my background.

(Note: There are four famous Saint Teresa's. This one is the French St. ThĂ©rĂšse of Lisieux (whose original name was Marie Françoise-ThĂ©rĂšse Martin).  The other three well known ones - in chronological order - are Teresa of Ávila, Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (her religious order name) whose original name was Edith Stein, and, last but not least, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, whose original name was AnjezĂ« Gonxhe Bojaxhiu)
