Peak population: 9 billion?

The Economist is predicting a peak world population of 9 billion, to be reached by 2050, and either zero or negative growth beyond that point.

My guess, based upon the negative growth rates already in place around the world, that the aggregate population will start to decline after 2050, and the decline will accelerate for a period of time, perhaps 100 years or more. That, of course, assumes that civilization as a whole doesn't collapse, a pretty big if.
