This BBC report raises a legal specter the U.S. government would prefer to avoid: "Man sues CIA over torture claims." In particular, evidence gathered during a discovery process could prove to be highly embarrassing, if ithe case is allowed to proceed normally. According to this Rand study, however, the discovery process is now mostly managed by federal magistrates.

I don't imagine this is any skin off the late pope's teeth, but it might mean something for those of us who have yet to enter through the pearly gates: "Dissident theologians participate in the canonization process of Pope John Paul II."

Much of my frustration in the past couple of years as a newly ordained priest stems from the fact that I seem to be coming very late into a sea change in the church in the U.S. It's as if there were a great political convention, and I didn't arrive until after the principal candidate and the running mate were already nominated, and I knew from that that the party was headed for disaster in the real world.
